Significant growth potential in the African telecom market

The mobile telecommunications market is booming in Africa. One third of Africa's one billion people own a mobile phone, a number that is expected to increase drastically in the coming years. The growth potential within this market presents opportunities for Ramboll Telecom.

Annual demand for 15,000 towers

Today, Ramboll delivers towers to Ghana and Nigeria. Ivory Coast and the Gabon are among the next African countries to receive deliveries of Ramboll towers. Demand for telecom towers is increasing.

- Estimates suggest that 15,000 new mobile phone towers are needed every year to meet the increasing demand for telecommunications networks in Africa. We are seeing an increase in sales of tower designs in West Africa, and we expect similar demands within this area of our business in the rest of Africa, says Head of Department Bobby Naveed Jamal, who is responsible for Ramboll Telecom's market efforts in Africa.

Ramboll Telecom offers mobile phone towers based on the company's own design concept. The mobile telephone companies or network-suppliers are responsible for setting up the actual networks, and Ramboll delivers the towers directly to these companies, who are then in charge of installing them.

- The advantage of our design is that it requires much less steel to produce than the typical telecom tower being used in African countries today. In addition, the Ramboll tower-design only takes a few days to install, and speed is of the essence, when you are assisting mobile phone companies set on ambitious rollouts, says Bobby Naveed Jamal.

Ramboll selected as "Outstanding Strategic Partner" in West Africa

A close cooperation with the world's largest mobile phone companies is crucial. Vodafone, Ericsson and Huawei have therefore chosen Ramboll as its preferred supplier. So far, Ramboll's collaboration with Huawei has resulted in a fine award, namely the "Outstanding Strategic Partner", which Huawei awarded Ramboll in September of this year.

- We received the news that Huawei had awarded us a prize for being an Outstanding Strategic Partner in West Africa with great pleasure. As Huawei is one of the largest suppliers to the African telecom market, the award suggests that Africa holds great prospects for us, says Bobby Naveed Jamal.
